The Basics of Chronic Idiopathic Constipation

Interested in learning more about Chronic Idiopathic Constipation (CIC)? You've come to the right place!

Scroll down to learn more!

So what exactly is CIC?

Chronic Idiopathic Constipation (CIC) is a condition that affects bowel function, where “chronic” means having symptoms for at least 6 months, while “idiopathic” means that the specific cause isn’t known. Patients with CIC in the Motegrity clinical studies may have experienced the following symptoms:

  • Infrequent and/or incomplete bowel movements
  • Straining at defecation
  • Hard stools

Did you know?

Even though CIC and other GI diseases are different, some of the symptoms may be similar.

If these symptoms sound familiar to you, you're not alone. Speak to your doctor about CIC.

Don't worry... you're not alone!

Talking about CIC can be uncomfortable.

  • An estimated 17.8 million adults in the US* may be affected by Chronic Idiopathic Constipation
*Based on 258.3 million adults living in the US in 2020 and a US prevalence of 6.9%. Treatment may not be appropriate for everyone who has CIC.

Speak up

  • Be your own best advocate and voice your concerns to your doctor
  • Talking about your CIC experience with friends and family may provide support

Talk to your doctor about Chronic Idiopathic Constipation and treatment options that may be right for you

What are the
risk factors of CIC?

In other words, is Chronic Idiopathic Constipation more likely to affect some than others? Here are a few of the possible risk factors that may contribute to developing CIC:

Gender

Women are more at-risk than men

Age

The risk of CIC increases as you age

Diet

Low-calorie diets may increase risk

Sedentary Lifestyle

Lack of physical activity and exercise may also increase risk

Low Fiber & Water Intake

Not consuming enough of either may lead to developing CIC

Other Medications

Those taking certain medications may be at an increased risk

Keep in mind

Although there are several risk factors associated with CIC, you may still develop this condition even if these risk factors do not apply to you.

What are some ways to better manage CIC?

Don't let CIC get the best of you. If you're having a hard time dealing with your condition, here are some tips and tricks that may help to better manage your symptoms.

Fiber Intake

Gradually increase the amount of fiber you consume to 20 to 30 g
per day

Water Intake

Ensure you're hydrating enough every day

Exercise

Try to incorporate regular exercise into your daily routine

Stress Levels

Do what you can to reduce the amount of stress in your life

How could my diet impact CIC?

The fiber in the foods you eat may help make your stools easier (or harder) to pass. The following are some tips around diet that may help manage your CIC:

  • Your doctor may recommend adding fiber to your diet
  • Foods high in insoluble fiber include whole grains, legumes, fruits, and nuts

Keep in mind

If you’ve already tried making these changes to your lifestyle, and you still aren’t finding the relief you’re looking for, it may be time to speak with your doctor about Motegrity.

Not sure how? Here's a useful tool to help guide you through the discussion.
